Things to do in Nimbin
Most visitors come for the main street and leave wishing they'd stayed longer. Here's what's worth your time in the village and in the hills around it.
Walk Cullen Street
Cullen Street is the village. In one painted block you'll find cafés, the pub, hemp and clothing shops, herbalists, crystal and book shops and the Hemp Embassy, alongside the shops locals actually use: the organic co-op, the Nimbin Emporium, the pharmacy and the newsagency.
Take your time. The street is short, but the murals, shopfronts and people are the attraction. The Nimbin Artists Gallery at 49 Cullen Street is a volunteer-run, not-for-profit gallery that has shown local work since 1997 and runs the annual Nimbin Artist Fair.
In August 2014 a fire on Cullen Street destroyed some of the village's best-known buildings, including the original Nimbin Museum and the Rainbow Cafe. Some of what you see today was rebuilt after it.
The Candle Factory and the Bush Theatre
The Old Butter Factory at 2 Blue Knob Road, a short walk from Cullen Street, holds two Nimbin institutions. Nimbin Candles has made hand-dipped candles for more than 50 years and has what it calls Australia's only water-driven candle-dipping deck. There's a visitor information point there too.
The Nimbin Bush Theatre in the same building is a venue for up to 350 people, with films, live music and workshops, a bar and a café. Check what's on before you come; there's often something on at night.
The Rainbow Walk and Aquarius Park
The Nimbin Rainbow Walk is a 750 metre path through the heart of the village, with boardwalks, bridges, artworks and more than 5,700 native plants. It opened in March 2025 and links to the new Aquarius Park. It's an easy, flat stroll and a good way to see the creek side of Nimbin.
Peace Park on Sibley Street has the skate park, and the Nimbin Swimming Pool is next door.
Permaculture, solar and alternative living
Nimbin has been a centre of sustainable living since the 1970s. Djanbung Gardens at 74 Cecil Street, less than a kilometre from the main street, is a permaculture education centre founded in 1993 that offers guided tours. Rainbow Power Company, started by locals in 1987, still designs and installs solar systems from its base at 1 Alternative Way.
At 7 Sibley Street there's a sustainable living hub with a community tools library, a monthly food swap and a re-love market.
Markets
The Nimbin Market runs on the fourth and fifth Sundays of the month at the Community Centre, and the farmers market is on Wednesday afternoons on Cullen Street. The Channon Craft Market, one of the region's biggest, is a short drive away on the second Sunday. Dates and details are in our Nimbin markets guide.
Nimbin Rocks
The Nimbin Rocks are the volcanic spires you pass on Nimbin Road a few kilometres south of the village, remnants of the ancient Wollumbin (Mount Warning) volcano. They are sacred initiation sites of the Widjabul Wia-bal people, now in Bundjalung custodianship, and public access is restricted. Visit Lismore advises viewing them from the road; there's a pull-in on Nimbin Road. Please don't climb or walk onto them.
Nightcap National Park
Nightcap National Park is part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area, and the range has the highest average rainfall in New South Wales. Two parts of it are an easy trip from Nimbin:
- Mount Nardi: 12 kilometres from Nimbin up a narrow sealed road (Newton Drive), the only sealed road into the park. From the top, the Pholis Gap walk is 4 km return and the Mount Matheson loop 3 km, each about an hour and a half. The Historic Nightcap Track is a 16 km, day-and-a-half walk.
- Protesters Falls: reached through The Channon along Terania Creek Road, about 15 km of mostly gravel. The walk is 1.4 km return through rainforest, about an hour. No dogs, and no swimming, to protect the endangered Fleay's barred frog. The falls are named after the Terania Creek logging protests of 1976 to 1979 that helped save the region's rainforests.
Gravel roads and causeways can become impassable after heavy rain, and tracks close from time to time. Check NPWS park alerts and the Nimbin weather before you go.
Events through the year
MardiGrass, on the weekend around the start of May, is the big one: see the MardiGrass guide. The first Nimbin Fringe Festival runs from 30 October to 1 November 2026, with music, comedy, circus, dance, film and visual art. For live music, workshops and community events this week, see what's on in Nimbin.

Common questions
Is Nimbin worth visiting?
Yes, if you're interested in art, music, alternative living or rainforest. The main street takes an hour or two, but with the galleries, the Candle Factory and Bush Theatre, the Rainbow Walk, a market and a walk in Nightcap National Park there's easily a full day or a weekend here.
Can you walk to Nimbin Rocks?
The rocks are a sacred Aboriginal site and public access is restricted. View them from the pull-in on Nimbin Road, a few kilometres south of the village, rather than walking onto them.
How far is Mount Nardi from Nimbin?
About 12 kilometres, up a narrow sealed road from the village. It's the start of several Nightcap National Park walks, including Pholis Gap and the Mount Matheson loop.
Can you swim at Protesters Falls?
No. Swimming is prohibited to protect the endangered Fleay's barred frog, and dogs aren't allowed on the track.
